Can BYD Deliver on EV Promises?
For a while it looked like BYD would be a leader in electric cars and plug-in hybrids. They had aggressive release schedules, great battery technology (at least on paper), and being based in China, they had some cost advantages over most of their competitors. They even had backing by none other than Warren Buffett! But then we started hearing about
All Cyclists and Bus Operators Should Know This
Surprisingly, despite their very different sizes, bicycles and buses have many things in common. They both stick mostly to the right side of the road (in countries that drive on the right, that is) and move slower than most other vehicles. On top of that, buses are frequently making stops and moving in and out of traffic, making them particularly intimidating from the point of view of cyclists. But from the point of view of bus drivers, the relationship with cyclists can also be confusing. That's why it's important to teach both how to saf... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/cyclists-and-buses-share-the-road-education-video-tutorial.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a
On my bike in the middle of the day, I see a lot of moms on the streets pushing strollers, and I always ponder that some of them might be happier and get more done on a bike. However, I know the hurdles to biking with babies, and there's an awkward in-between time when babies get too big (and also too heavy) for bike seats and trailers but they may not be quite rea... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/bike-to-baby-stroller-in-seconds.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a
Guim Valls Teruel is travelling 5 continents on an electric bicycle to promote the use of cleaner energy and the non-reliance on fossil fuel worldwide. Currently in New Zealand, the Electric Bicycle World Tour has already clogged quite a lot of mileage so we decided to see how Guim's getting on so far. Guim started his tour on the 5th of June 2009 from the Olympic stadium in Beijing and his plan is to arrive in London in 2012. ... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/electric-bicycle-world-tour.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

In a surprising but welcome move, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers today sent a letter to House and Senate leadership stating its opposition to Sen. Muscles and Sun
Sanyo Electric has completed the installation of two solar parking lots in the Setagaya ward in Tokyo, Japan, and a third smaller solar parking is coming. The two big stations will each have 40 Eneloop electric bikes, and the small one 20. These will be available as "community bicycles" for local residents and visitors (kind of like regular bike-sharing, but no details on membership conditions yet).... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/sanyo-solar-parking-lots-electric-bikes-tokyo.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

Normally, we'd be 100% behind incentives designed to spur the development of cleaner technologies, and to help consumers make cleaner, more conscious buying decisions. Which is why, on the face of it, California's $5,000 rebate for the purchase of a number of electric vehicles, seems like a good idea. But the structure, and the rollout of the program leaves something to be desired. ... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/california0new-5000-electric-car-rebate.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

The Transport Politic; click to enlargeThe Biggest Infrastructure Project in the World. Ever.
It is the most extraordinary map from Transport Politic; those yellow lines are proposed high speed rail links through India and Iran, right through to the European high speed rail network so that one can cruise right into London, at about 155 MPH the whole way.

With China getting ready to tie the entire world together with high speed rail, it is easy to forget that America once dominated when it came to innovation in transport. Back in 1870, Alfred Ely Beach built a pneumatic subway under Broadway. (in secret yet; he just had a permit for a package delivery system)

This writer didn't expect much from Ray Lahood, calling him the "Congressman from Caterpillar" and suspecting that he would tend to favor the car and the big roads that they ride on over alternate forms of transport. I was wrong; I learn from
If I hadn't taken a test drive I'm sure I never would have purchased a Sanyo eneloop electric-assist bicycle. It's not that I'm not lazy - I am, and many people near to me know that I am a rather wimpy urban biker, as I complain if I have to go too far or haul too much stuff. No, the reason I wouldn't buy an e-bike is more to do with the negative image I have of any motorized cycles since I began bicycle commuting in 2006.
And then one cold January day I rode the eneloop up the big hill near my house i... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/join-the-e-bike-revolution.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

"Today we flare enough natural gas to power Germany"
Oak Ridge National Laboratory estimated in 2005 that about 0.5% of all CO2 emissions from fossil fuels came from natural gas flaring. The most shocking thing about this is that all this energy (and we're talking about a lot of BTUs... the quote above is by Jeff McDaniel, business development director for Velocys.) isn't actually used for anything useful (unless you count the light, but burning lots of natural gas is a ridiculous way to pr... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/stop-natural-gas-flaring-gas-to-liquid-reactors-petrobras.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

It's Also More Powerful and Has Optional All-Wheel Drive
On Friday, Ford unveiled its new purpose-built Police Interceptor car. It has a bunch of useful features for law-enforcement agencies, including better safety characteristics (f.ex. a side-curtain air bag rollover protection system helps protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes). But what interests us here is that it will also be more significantly more fuel-efficient than the venerable Ford Crown Vic, the workhorse of most police departments in North-America.... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/new-ford-police-interceptor-cruiser-car-fuel-efficient-no-v8.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

For all those times you wish you could have brought your bike with you on the train, bus or plane, now there is Biknd Helium. The Helium bike case is not quite lighter than air, but definitely lighter than a standard hard case, weighing in at a mere than 9.5 kg (20.9 lbs). The trick: it's inflatable. Canadian start-up company Biknd has a patent pending for their ingenious invention. The Supply Chain for Electric Cars is Growing
About 6 months ago we wrote that LG Chem was thinking about building an advanced lithium-ion battery plant in Holland, Michigan, to supply battery packs to GM for the Volt PHEV. Now it's confirmed, everything's official and the groundbreaking is scheduled for this summer, with a 2012 target for the beginning of operations. LG Chem says that the plant will create over 400 jobs by 2013, and many people will be hired and trained in advance.... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/lg-chem-battery-plant-holland-michigan-chevy-volt.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

Risk assessment is hard. We humans are hard-wired with many cognitive biases that can often distort our perception of reality and make us fear the wrong things. For example, on average, people will be more afraid of something with which they are unfamiliar compared to something that they see every day. Cars fall into the "familiar" category, and to remind us of the risk associated with driving, the nice people are the Infrastructurists made a really cool infographic that shows how cars are killing people around the wo... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/infrastructurist-infographic-how-cars-kill-us-around-the-world.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a

Did you know that replacing a pre-1994 diesel truck (or at least the engine) with a 2004-2006 model could cut soot pollution by about 2/3, and reduce smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by more than half? Post 2007 diesel trucks are even better, with a reduction of soot particles by about 95% and NOx by at least 3/4. That's a pretty big difference (though it doesn't solve CO2 emissions), and it esp... a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/diesel-trucks-pollution-reduction-epa-port-nyc-new-jersey.php?campaign=th_rss_cars"Read the full story on TreeHugger/a
