Cars Go Green - electric cars green Questions
Question #1:
Another oil platform sending smoke into the air and oil into the sea. When will we ban oil. We have the technology to make oil obsolete. Electric cars, wind, solar are all proven.
There have been some wonderful reports on NPR where Environmental Studies professors are studying green cities in Europe and how they turn their wood pulp waste into power.
Its time to end our appetite for oil.

What Do You Think?
Question #3:
I happen to have one of those jobs that requires me to be on time, constently. I have a basic car that does this day in and day out. But when I golf, I prefer the electric car.
Does this make me green? I feel good that I am doing my part to save the world.
OK. Will Obama SIGN a law. SIGN. Happy you hippie freaks?
Question #4:
In a recent interview, Dr. John Felmy, Chief Economist of the American Petroleum Institute admitted that by shifting capital investment from fossil fuels to rewneable energy and energy efficiency, “I have no doubts you can get a lot more jobs.”
Given that one of the USA's biggest problems right now is unemployment, and that switching to renewable energy and increased efficiency would also have a host of other benefits (decreasing global warming, decreasing ocean acidification, cleaner air and water, decreased reliance on foreign oil [when combined with plug-in hybrids and electric cars], etc. etc.), why shouldn't we make this transition?
Gee David, and you wonder why we call you 'deniers'.
Expeller - I never suggested 'green jobs' would solve our unemployment problem, merely help it.
Your article's second argument seems incredibly stupid. We shouldn't invest in green technologies because they're dominated by foreign companies. Guess why they're dominated by foreign companies? Because foreign economies invest in green technologies!
Thanks for that worthless ad hominem 'answer', Bad Moon. I'm so sorry that I linked to an interview with the API Chief Economist. First jim and now you don't seem to give a crap about the content if it's on a website you don't like. Grow up.
Bad Moon - my question was about the comments of the API Chief Economist. I couldn't give less of a crap if the rest of the article was good or bad. Next time try answering the question.
Question #5:
We have to charge the batteries and this comes from electric mains. so how do we call this a green option?
Question #6:
Just a thought that I had, with all this 'green' energy going on. Are we going to see a future that is going to be without fire? Heat by induction? Electricity from solar and wind farms? driving electric cars etc..
So is the future one that will be without fire? maybe the occasional bbq. I'm not saying fire will be completely gone. There will always be forest fires etc.. what i was thinking of was our reliance on fire.
Question #7:
alot of car companys are making these electric cars to make the world greener and to keep us going when there is no more oil in the future so im wondering where the hell are they going to put all of these electric plug-in points in the UK and how long will it take to charge them up and also will all electric cars be FREE on insurance and or tax, etc?
Question #8:
You are up for a challenge then, okay. Let us see how smart you can be.
A high school student(could be me if you want-just to allow you to say bad words as long as you want-For girls: You can replace all the HEs with SHEs for easy reference :P) wants to go to college and is completely clueless about what he wants to be. But he knows himself.
According to him:
He likes working with numbers.
He hates Any majors related to: Business, Biology, Chemistry, Military and Law.
He loooooooves money.
He wants to own a house.
He liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes traveling.
He wants to own a fast car to drive from time to time.
He hates electric engineering. But he liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes robots- a weird combination, huh? Here is an explanation: he hates the green electricity ships or any other circuits designing.
His family doesn't want him to become neither a pilot nor a ship captain.
He likes writing and typing. But he doesn't want to spend all his time in front of computer screens- as we said he likes enjoying his time driving a fast car. But he hates working in land transportation.
He likes to work in an environment which involves a lot of colleagues.
The question is: What major will you suggest him? Considering that he isn't an artist.
what about we make it a little harder?
:P
He likes physics
and He doesn't want to work as a mathematician
Question #9:
Life was simpler under the petrochemical monopoly. Miles per gallon was just that. Then we find that hypermiling techniques can allow some drivers to go far further. The EPA doesn't actually drive cars it calculates mileage. Click Here
It might be somewhat simple to convert gasoline to energy and determine the equivalent energy used to drive an electric car. On this basis the Tesla Roadster gets 244 mpge. (miles per gallon equivalent) Click Here
By law the EPA must provide a mileage rating, but hasn't come up with an official release: Click Here
So fast forward to what DOE's regulations would give us for mileage. Go here and scroll down to Petroleum-equivalent efficiency and tell me if this is something that would give you valuable information or is an intention to simply confuse the issue? Click Here
Linlyons, You are an intelligent person but you might take a moment to read the several paragraphs it takes to translate the DOE criteria. You might be as surprised as I to see what is included.
Nata, are you familiar with how much energy it takes to refine a gallon of gasoline and that you could drive an electric car further on that energy alone? Click Here Your numbers do not seem plausible.
Crash: Until you organize the United States of Crash we will have to consider the laws of this (US) country and not your wish list.
One point is clear, The DOE regs are not confusing if you don't look at them. One wonders if one head in the clouds is worth two in the sand.
Paula, altough I have, in the past, had some severe criticism of things you have written your answer is most on topic. Several different mileage ratings can be as confusing as one that is difficult to interpret. (As can this question if someone is not familiar with the issues.) We might hope that magnetic motors would work but the Australian, Oklahoma and Canadian work have all been discredited. (and it may not be revelant to EPA mileage.)

Question #11:
Well let me say this. If you have an electric car, the perk is you are not buying gas, or using gas. The downside I see is that you are electricity which means you are still getting your power from a fossil fuel one way or another. Plus there is the other problem of batteries. Aren't batteries incredibly bad for the environment when they break down? Can we recycle them? Does that really make it much better? Also isn't manufacturing them bad too? don't they have to drill for the chemicals to make mercury or for the mercury itself? Lastly why do we drill out so far, in waters that are so deep a manned sub can hardly go down there, when we could be drilling on land (and US soil for that matter) and not risking our oceans or land environments? Sure there could still potentially be spills on land but atleast it can be cleaned much easilier and sealed up much faster.
And lastly does it seem odd to anyone else that when Bush was president and Katrina happened the media would not give him a break, but with Obama as president they seem to hardly mention the oil spill? Just strange..
Question #12:
A plug-in car uses the electric grid which is already under-invested in the USA, given our current needs. More importantly, this grid is inefficient--I hear that the loss during transmission is fairly high. Furthermore, the power source to generate the electricity comes from a variety of sources, some of which are decidedly inefficient.
Is there any study to take these factors into account? Is an electric-plug in hybrid more green given the issues I have described VERSUS. just driving a gasoline car, or some other hybrid (gasoline-electric, methane-electric, highly efficient gasoline car)?

Question #14:
and today, thanks to the green energy part of the stimulus, we make almost 40% of them. Doesn't this mean we are going in the right direction?
Question #15:
ok I am first writing then going to divide into the chapters. So if you can please read and tell me where you think i should end each capter it wld be great and tell me what you think about it (being soo honest)
I stared out the window watching the beautiful lush Virginia landscape they passed behind us. I would miss the green beautiful trees, and the tall majestic mountains. The car rode along a river that passed along. The reflection of the blue and greens from mountains and tree was so pretty, so I got out my oil pastels and sketch pad. I draw the blue-green mountains reflecting into the water, orange trees, and the fishermen casting their poles into the lake water. One of my biggest dreams is to get into a major art school and become a world known artist like Picasso, Vincent Van Gough, or even David Jacques-Lois. Some of my favorite artist and biggest inspirations when I paint, sketch, and draw.
We were moving into a small town like 12 miles from Salem where my dad will be working. He works as a kind of historian, he does the research for like major books. I looked over at James who seemed occupied in his video game, like always. Anna and Amber were playing with their new dolls. I figured I could catch up on the sleep I missed from the last week. All the moving stuff has stressed me out. We were stressed about selling our old house, repainting, and, moving everything. Moving in the middle of the year can really mess up everything. But, the faces of Allison, Kimmi, Victoria, and Angela haunted my mind, the pain shot through her like an electric shock. I could remember the pained faces and I didn’t want to. They all looked so upset when I told them that I was leaving them for who knows how long. I know I should be used to it by now. When I was 8 we moved from Montana to Virginia and like a few times before that but this time I was comfortable and happy. " Onyx dear, a great mind once said ' If you don't like something, change it; If you can't change it change how you think of it' that great mind was Mary Engelbreit. Think about those word for a while I am sure it will help." Dad said interrupting my train of thought.
I wish I didn’t have to leave so soon. But at least my friends promised to visit soon and I would visit them. Luckily the trip is Only 6 hours by plane, and much more by car. I hoped that nothing too drastic would happen because I couldn’t help them and they are very dependant. Since I’m always ready for a new challenge this will be so fun, I hope. James won’t have any issues finding friends, guys and girls. As for the twins they normally don’t have a lot of friends, they prefer to play with each other.
Our new house was promised to be cool, but seeing the pictures I don’t understand why somebody doesn’t live there. I get to go to North Reading High School. As soon as Thanks giving is over my mom will enroll me there, James at the middle, and the twins at the elementary.
We arrived at the house around eight in the morning. Wow. Well I know for sure we have privacy. This house is so huge, and kind of creepy. The paint is fading, windows have shutters falling off, the grass is dead, flowers are withered, and the trees have little or no leaves. Anna and Amber would probably be creped out by this place. Everyone grabbed a box and went inside. We put all the boxes in the living room before they took the first break. Everyone grabbed their own boxes and took them to their own rooms. I’m on the third floor in the back room; Amber and Anna are on the same floor but the rooms closest to the stairs. James and my parents are on the second floor. I wish that I friends could see this new room! It is so unique too, unlike my old room back in Virginia. That room was plain, green walls, blue carpet, boring. I knew how to fix up my new room. Paint the walls; add a rug to cover some of the marks on the floor, drapes, and easy things. I definitely could get used to this, just paint the walls maybe an electric blue, get a hot pink fluffy rug, and hang some old pictures of my old friends. Anna and Amber want to share a room, mom promised to paint it the pretty pink they chose and they are ecstatic. James room was gray with almost white hardwood floors, he is gonna paint it blue and a metallic and put up some guitar decals on the walls.
I rushed down the stairs to James room.
“Hey, James can you come help move stuff around in my room?” I asked James.
“Yeah sure” He said and followed me.
We went up to my room and spent over an hour arranging and rearranging both our furniture. We had so much fun he couldn’t decide where to put his shelves and posters and pictures, his guitar amp, and all his musical things. I had to put pictures up, tape posters, organize and reorganize my clothes and desk, a lot of stuff for two people!
I have to admit I’m closest to him. He is a very fun person after all he is outgoing and very charismatic it’s hard not to love
Question #16:
I recently moved to Syracuse, NY and live about 2 or so miles from my job. I have license, but no car because I don't really need one, I am able to save even more money than Geico by having no insurance at all, and feel like I can help the environmental crisis, especially in light of the BP Oil Disaster. A few options I have are to get a regular bike, electric bike, or moped/scooter. The bus around here is about $50/mo. with a bus pass, and about the same if I just pay the fare. I plan on being in the area for 14 months or so, so it adds up to about $700 that I could put towards something that was more flexible and possibly more "green".
Anyway, the question here is for those who live in central New York state or the Syracuse area. Could I even drive these modes of transportation for an approx. 2+ mile commute during what I am told is a very harsh winter season?
Question #17:
I'm looking for either an alternative to a bike or a super steady bike, since I have VERY poor balance and cannot, despite several attempts over the years, learn to ride a bike without falling over.
I don't have a drivers license and with the hard times can't afford the car+ the insurance, etc. But I need to get to work and other things, and public transportation is a hassle, and only go so far.
I need specific suggestions, names, etc and why they're a good choice, for at least one of the following:
-A tricycle (electric, I suppose, is preferred) that doesn't look really, really stupid for a 21 year old female to be riding around on..
-Some sort of cool, electric vehicle that is sleek and allows me to ride it as if I were a cyclist in the eyes of law enforcement (so I don't get in trouble for taking the sidewalk like them)..
Something that can take bumps, and, if it's electric (since I'm not sure how those work), I need to be able to either have the battery last over at least 3,4,5 miles, or still function when the battery runs out.
Also, I will always be carrying a bag, since I need to bring my laptop, my uniform, etc, for my job..
I need whatever it is to be steady, as stylish as possible, and be something I can take to work with me, preferably to leave in the back room or something..
Any suggestions? I need some help, guys!!
Five stars and whatnot for the most helpful, detailed answer.
Please, no answers with just links. I've searched the web already, using all the different terms I can think of, and I keep getting sites with--lists of LINKS. Annoying!
Again, if you think that you know of a steady electric bike that I can actually stay on even with my bad balance, please, by all means, let me know what it is!!
Thank you!!
Question #18:
Each one of the vehicles is basically going to be priced at roughly double of what a comparable car costs right now....now hold that thought for a moment
Leaf: $20-25K...Accent 9-12K
Volt 40-45K...Camry...20-25K
Tesla 100-120K...Boxster...50-65K
Seems like the price difference between the regular car and the 'green' car is a WHOLE lot of green as in cash.
Now what do you suppose will happen to your electric bill, especially if these vehicles go mainstream?
Question #19:
I have a traxxas rustler and the engine quit.(its electric Titan 12t550 motor) Before i buy a new one is ther anyway i can tell if its the engine or a short in wires.I put battery in and it would not move at first then i pushed it and it took off for a little bit then it quit all together. The green light is on and blinks when I push gas control. Front tires turn back in forth just rear tires wont spin and engine wont even make a noise just wanna now if there ne way to find out if engine blown
did the battery thing just making sure that would turn it if it was good time to buy a new one
Question #20:
I have a really good energy efficiency idea for an electric car. Who would I contact to make this idea happen? Bc there's no way I can build this idea alone, I'd need a car company to help out. Any help would be great, thanks.
