Cars Go Green - green hybrid car Questions
Question #1:
Since there seem to be many assumptions made in this section about people of different political persuations, everything from religious persuasion to favorite fiction genres and even stranger things here is a political survey to satisfy the curiosity of anyone interested in such things. Shortly before I close out the survey, I will in an "Additional details" give my own answers to these questions. Yes, I know many of the questions have NOTHING to do with politics (though some do) but the point is to satisfy the curiosity of those who have been answering and asking recent questions in the politics section.
1. How would you describe yourself politically. If you are liberal please specify modern, classical or other. If you are conservative please specify "neo" "paleo" or other. If you are anarchist please specify "anarcho" "green" "without adjectives" or other.
2. Do you own a pick-up truck? Do you own a volvo? Do you own a hybrid car?
3. What is your favorite band [and / or soloist] of the 1990's?
4. Do you live in the Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere or right on the equator?
5. How would you describe your religious or spiritual beliefs and /or secular philosophy?
6. How should political thinkers and leaders from the 1700's and before be judged?
7. Do you "hate America" and if so why?
8. How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
9. What is your favorite genre of fiction?
10. Do you believe 9/11 was an Inside Job?
I am about to close this out. Here are my answers:
1. Libertarian / An-Cap
2. I own a little Toyota Yaris
3. Hmm, tough one. I am a huge fan of Beck but I also like Rasputina
4. Northern
5. Ignostic [no, I did not misspell agnostic]
6. They can only be judged by comparing their ideas to the standard ideas that existed at the time they lived. How far did they move the ball forward?
7. No, only most politicians.
8. Two or three times a month
9. Sci-Fi
10. No. But the government DID know something like this was being planned and it is disgraceful that they did nothing to stop it. But I have come to expect nothing better from the government.
Question #2:
They laugh at me because I'm a vegan and I try to buy strictly organic foods. They say they're going to put me in a military school so I'll see how the "real world" works. That the military would "make me eat meat, or make me sit infront of the food until I ate it" They say they're going to put me in a mental institution. and that I'm fanatical and being stupid. They think its crazy that for my 16th birthday I want a honda insight hybrid instead of a "regular" car. Another thing that me, my brother, and my mom got into a debate about, I said that I was planning to move to san francisco because it was a "green" and progressive city, and they argued that it was no more civilized than where we live now (Gastonia, NC) and...well anyways, what do I do? Thanks. p.s. I'm 15 years old.
@green-eyez: Thanks, thats a compliment. :-)
@ karina: You're awesome!
Question #3:
In a recent interview, Dr. John Felmy, Chief Economist of the American Petroleum Institute admitted that by shifting capital investment from fossil fuels to rewneable energy and energy efficiency, “I have no doubts you can get a lot more jobs.”
Given that one of the USA's biggest problems right now is unemployment, and that switching to renewable energy and increased efficiency would also have a host of other benefits (decreasing global warming, decreasing ocean acidification, cleaner air and water, decreased reliance on foreign oil [when combined with plug-in hybrids and electric cars], etc. etc.), why shouldn't we make this transition?
Gee David, and you wonder why we call you 'deniers'.
Expeller - I never suggested 'green jobs' would solve our unemployment problem, merely help it.
Your article's second argument seems incredibly stupid. We shouldn't invest in green technologies because they're dominated by foreign companies. Guess why they're dominated by foreign companies? Because foreign economies invest in green technologies!
Thanks for that worthless ad hominem 'answer', Bad Moon. I'm so sorry that I linked to an interview with the API Chief Economist. First jim and now you don't seem to give a crap about the content if it's on a website you don't like. Grow up.
Bad Moon - my question was about the comments of the API Chief Economist. I couldn't give less of a crap if the rest of the article was good or bad. Next time try answering the question.
Question #4:
I have a chance to buy a 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid with 71,000 miles from a trusted seller. However I have no experience with hybrid cars and would love to hear your experiences.
What mainly worries me is replacing the battery every 5 years? which is about an additional $1,800 in maintenance
I know the benefits of driving a greener car for the greater good but im a college student on a fixed income and im worrying its gonna be pricey to maintain.
Question #5:
I'm going to be 16 soon, and I'm looking for a kind of fun and girly car. I was looking at sports cars, but my parents care too much about safety and my driving speed so now i have to find a family friendly car (which means at least 5 seats) that's still fun for me to drive around.
I'm liking the new toyota prius cuz it's fuel efficient, more spacious than other hybrids, and has cool technology. I also like the ford fiesta for its cool lime green color haha and other features (like the price)....any ideas or suggestions?
btw: price range around 20,000even though the prius is more
Question #6:
Life was simpler under the petrochemical monopoly. Miles per gallon was just that. Then we find that hypermiling techniques can allow some drivers to go far further. The EPA doesn't actually drive cars it calculates mileage. Click Here
It might be somewhat simple to convert gasoline to energy and determine the equivalent energy used to drive an electric car. On this basis the Tesla Roadster gets 244 mpge. (miles per gallon equivalent) Click Here
By law the EPA must provide a mileage rating, but hasn't come up with an official release: Click Here
So fast forward to what DOE's regulations would give us for mileage. Go here and scroll down to Petroleum-equivalent efficiency and tell me if this is something that would give you valuable information or is an intention to simply confuse the issue? Click Here
Linlyons, You are an intelligent person but you might take a moment to read the several paragraphs it takes to translate the DOE criteria. You might be as surprised as I to see what is included.
Nata, are you familiar with how much energy it takes to refine a gallon of gasoline and that you could drive an electric car further on that energy alone? Click Here Your numbers do not seem plausible.
Crash: Until you organize the United States of Crash we will have to consider the laws of this (US) country and not your wish list.
One point is clear, The DOE regs are not confusing if you don't look at them. One wonders if one head in the clouds is worth two in the sand.
Paula, altough I have, in the past, had some severe criticism of things you have written your answer is most on topic. Several different mileage ratings can be as confusing as one that is difficult to interpret. (As can this question if someone is not familiar with the issues.) We might hope that magnetic motors would work but the Australian, Oklahoma and Canadian work have all been discredited. (and it may not be revelant to EPA mileage.)
Question #7:
I dont care about power (well I do for sports cars but this is not a sports car :P) I am interested in buying a green car. It can be gas powered, if it is a hybrid, or really fuel efficient. Again just recommend something. I dont have much money so anything below 15k would be cool. And insurance is expensive so please nothing to sporty.
Question #8:
A plug-in car uses the electric grid which is already under-invested in the USA, given our current needs. More importantly, this grid is inefficient--I hear that the loss during transmission is fairly high. Furthermore, the power source to generate the electricity comes from a variety of sources, some of which are decidedly inefficient.
Is there any study to take these factors into account? Is an electric-plug in hybrid more green given the issues I have described VERSUS. just driving a gasoline car, or some other hybrid (gasoline-electric, methane-electric, highly efficient gasoline car)?
Question #9:
1. Departed
I looked at my room, what was left of my room. I look at the colorless walls like most of the house. My dark carpet that had gotten warns out over the years. The walls were slanted. The blue carpet was a darker color.
I dragged my hand against the hard thick dirty carpet. I felt my finger numbing as I rubber then against the carpet harder. There was gum on the floor it had turned black since before.
My room was empty. It was always like that. I felt the cold golden knob against my warm fingers cooling.
I walked through the narrow hallway with the white walls.
The house felt so empty. We had gotten clear of the house months ago when we lost the house in January.
We were ready to go to Del Monte, California a rainy place to live were my uncle Honz lived.
We were going to live there since we lost our house and need to stay some were. I remember going there for the summer years ago.
I walked though so big brown door that were the doors of my mothers room. ☼1☼
“Mom”? I muttered. My voice went higher than I expect it.
There was a box in the middle of the lime room. I walked to the box and looked what was inside.
There was a picture of Scarlet, my twin who resent had gone missing three months ago after our Birthday and was clamed dead.
I look at my sister she looked much like me she had my warm smile. My long reddish hair that went up to my neck. She had my long round classic nose. She had my almond green eyes but the only thing she didn’t have was my beauty mark under my eye.
I saw my mom she looked quiet similar to me but except that she’s darker and quiet smaller than me. She had long thick hair that was tied into a tress. She has a dark tan tone. She had big green almond eye. She had laugh lines though.
“Over here”. She said her voice was cold and hard.
I walked into the bathroom the blue color walls were dark
“Umm, wait get these to the car”. She said making no notice that I was right next to her. She look at me holding the picture. She grabbed the picture from my hand and smiled warmly.
“Remember were we took this picture”? She said about to cry.” We took it in Santa Cruz last August”. I Said.
“OH”. She said.
“Your sister looks just like you”. She said almost about to cry again. Duhh! my sister looked like me she was my twin. ” I wish she was back”. She said whimpering.
“I wish she came back to”. I said. I do wish she came back I miss her.
I grabbed the boxes she was holding. They made my hand hurt they were heavy for me. They were half my size. I walked out hearing my moms foots step behind me.
I felt the cold air hit against my skin making it hard to breath.
“Come on”. I heard someone voice.
It was Elliot. ☼2☼
Elliot had long black hair like mom. He was a dark tan color . He had big brown eyes. He was tall only thirteen years old my little brother had gotten bigger he was almost my size.
I let the boxes fall into the car it was a black Toyota Hybrid with 23 horse power.
“Get in”. Mom said her voice got hard. What was her crisis she wants us to go now? Sometimes I don’t get her.
I got in the car Elliot was in the back.
I got my backpack. I knew she knew I lied I was always a bad liar she would all way know if I lied. We had lost our house about a month ago. Mom had lost her job as a singer in Roxy’s chill curb. Mom hadn’t paid the bills since then.
There was a dead silent’s in the car. It was a long time I couldn’t wait to get to the airport so I wouldn’t have to see Isaac.
We got to the William R. Fairchild airport.
I saw the car stop in front. I got out of the car and stretch my legs that were so numb. I walked over to the back of the car.
I grabbed me suitcase from the trunk they weren’t as weighty as the box mom had gave me. What were in these boxes?
“Charlie, Elliot”. I heard her croak from behind
“Mom we’ll be fine I promise I’ll take care of Elliot”. I said trying to convince her.
“Ok”. She said.
“Just call if you want to come back Charlie ok.” she alleged.
I didn’t want to stay I just want mom to be happy it wasn’t because of my selfish reason.
“Mom, dose it mater Estern doesn’t have any space”. I said.
“I’ll miss you kid, I love you guys” She said.
“Now call me when you get there ok and email my every day k.” she said her voice went to a high pitch after throwing her gum away.
“I will mom”. I said. ☼3☼
“Ok now go I don’t want you guys to be late.” She said. She hugged me and Elliot for one last time. The last goodbye to her and to Port Angles. Goodbye to my old life I would begin a new chapter in my life. We gave are ticket to a lady with a big grin on her face.” Have a good flight”. She said her voice was kind of squeaky. We look for are seat A4 and A5. The people were shoving me against the walls in the plane. I was running out of air it felt like my lungs were getting punched out of air. I got out my inhaler and shoved it in my mouth rapidly
Question #10:
You have been talking about "going green" for years now, and what has been done?
Well, so far we got a few hybrids out, that STILL run on gas. We have the technology to manipulate molecules and operate systems with just our brains, yet we just can't seem to get off of oil....
I just read an article that said hybrids have "quiet problem". Since they are so quiet they could be dangerous to unsuspecting pedestrians or the blind. Are you kidding me?
We have an oil spill that is devastating the environment and the economy. If I'm not mistaken several people died when the oil spill began, and so far I would bet money that not a single person world-wide has died from a hybrid being too quiet...
Why don't you people ask questions?
Why do you sit back and let your own government bail out massive corporations whose very foundation is OIL!?!
Why don't you make them produce non-petro cars?
Why don't you make them do what you want them to do? You have that right and more importantly, you have that power. You outnumber them tremendously.
I just want to know why. Why everyone has become so detached from the real world, and so amazingly apathetic.
I think I'm becoming misanthropic.
I don't know why I even ask.
I already know the answer.
It's because they have used debt to basically enslave you. And they keep you distracted with stupid garbage, and kept busy with working and trying not to let debt consume you.
All the while not taking the time to realize that money doesn't even serve a purpose to the function of human society. That's the problem.
Get rid of money, and you will see a better time.
Question #11:
I will be in the market for a more greener car like soon maybe early next year but id like to know if any manufacturers are making anything that is better or has more mpgs than a prius i know prius has like 48 mpg in the city but a lot of the newer cars use hydrogen like the honda so let me know if niot then ill just stay with the prius
this is the honda vehicle but its only in california

Question #13:
Wouldn't I have a reputation that I care for the environment and green energy? i would love to get that kind of respect
Question #14:
I wrote a persuasive essay for English a while back and I thought it'd be appropriate to post it somewhere on the Internet, so why not Y!A? :D Anyways, I can't find my 4 or 5 sources anywhere but will edit them in if I find them. Tell me what you guys think...once I get the sources up you can check my internal citations :P
Hybrids Are Bad for the Environment
Hybrids are all the craze nowadays and the car companies are selling them under the impression that they are the ultimate in green car technology. They have an advertised MPG, or miles per gallon, that is much, much higher than gasoline and diesel fueled cars. They emit fewer greenhouse gases while running which contributes to the slowing of global warming, the natural heating of the Earth which can be intensified due to higher than normal amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Finally, they use less gasoline because of the MPG which will save the precious gasoline supplies in the world. But are they really that eco-friendly? Hybrids use Nickel-Cadmium or Lithium-ion batteries, Cadmium and Lithium being extremely rare in large quantities. The processing of the nickel in preparation for battery making releases copious amounts of sulfur dioxide into the air, which causes acid rain, which will destroy the ecosystem for miles around the nickel plants. Hybrids also advertise 19 MPG higher than what the realistic MPGs of hybrids are, and the precious gasoline that hybrids are using less of, will run out about the same time the precious minerals used in the hybrid batteries run out at current rates. There are also hybrids that plug into the wall, and of course that makes the emissions out of the car less, but the emissions from the coal being burned in 70% of the United States is much less clean than the gasoline and diesel fuels. Hybrids should not be developed further, as they are as destructive to the environment as gasoline cars are, as they use precious minerals in their batteries, cause acid rain around the nickel plants, destroying ecosystems, not saving them, and burn coal instead of gasoline for power. The best alternative for the most eco-friendly car is a clean diesel car with the PZEV, or Partial Zero Emission Vehicle, option available at many dealerships.
The batteries used in hybrids destroy ecosystems around the mining and processing plants and the precious minerals used in hybrids will run out at about the same time as gasoline. Will this really solve the problem? The batteries in hybrids, in an example of the Prius batteries, made in Sudbury, Ontario, cause acid rain. According to Impact Lab, “[t]he acid rain around Sudbury was so bad it destroyed all the plants and the soil slid down off the hillside” (Prius), and with more and more companies creating hybrids, more and more battery processing plants will be made, causing more and more acid rain due to the copious amounts of sulfur dioxide emitted during battery processing. Not only do the batteries destroy the ecosystems around the plants, “after maybe 100,000 miles, the battery starts to lose its ability to charge. Tesla Motors performance figures even state that after 50,000 miles, the batteries will only perform at about 70% their optimal, factory level” (Why). What does that mean? That means that after 100,000 miles the battery will have to be replaced, and the used batteries cannot be recycled, and thus just go into landfills. And if you want optimal performance, you’d have to change the battery every 50,000 miles. The average gasoline car can be used until nearly 300,000 miles before ultimate failure with minor repairs, which is 4-7 batteries in a hybrid. And you have to remember that, according to Four-bits.com, “lithium… is pretty rare in large quantities. With projected increases in the use of lithium, the known mines would run out about the same time as oil” (Why). This makes hybrids just another quick fix that won’t fix the problem with the environment long term.
Many hybrids are being converted into plug-in hybrids which plug directly into a household wall socket and charge via the coal-burning power plants that provide electricity to 70% of the United States, and coal emits many more greenhouse gases than gasoline does. This means that “coal-burning plants could be even worse for the environment than gasoline-burning engines…” (Hybrid). And even in the green-powered electricity states, such as California, Jim Motavalli of The Environmental Magazine quoted that the
“ACEEE concluded that a plug-in version of the Toyota Prius could reduce CO2 emissions by a third over a conventional Prius hybrid, but only if its batteries were charged with California electricity — generated mainly from relatively clean sources. In the Midwest, dominated by coal-burning power plants, the report says the plug-in Prius would actually generate one percent more carbon dioxide” (Motavalli).
California being the strictest state in emissions standard, this is a rare case of hybri
Thanks for your rebuttal :D I spent about 5 hours digging through all the pro hybrid stuff to get to this con hybrid stuff... I still dislike hybrids (I'm a fast car guy, not a fuel efficient one) but I was not aware that the sudbury (spelling?) was cleaned up... anyways, thanks for your rebuttal, I convinced my whole english class that hybrids were bad (including my hybrid-driving teacher) so now I have the actual facts. I'd still rather ride a bike to be fuel efficient. :P
Question #15:
With today's obsession with hybrid cars and recycling, have we forgotten about protecting the natural areas in the country? Because it seems now the democratic party (which used to be the environmental party) got into power in my home town, construction workers have been having a field day building a public library over woods (when we already have a public library in driving distance) buying up farmland for housing projects (which could easily be built out of urban landscapes that aren't in use) and overall trying to make Raleigh, NC "a place to be" at the cost of what was once (and still is though not for much longer) fairly green land. So what caused this shift?
@Tommy: Odd considering it didn't really start until We got democrats in city planning, the board of education and as governor.....and president.
That's another thing about it. Whenever national parks are mentioned in my HS, the response among the Conservatives tends to be positives while the liberals (at least the ones I know) usually cry "BOring!"
@Wounded Duck: It's called urban renewal.
Question #16:
If I am driving an old but mostly functioning and very pretty car, would the carbon requirements for building a new hybrid exceed the carbon footprint used by my car?
It has 6 cylinders, at 2.5 litres.
Question #17:
You've been saying that "healthcare is a human right"
What other products and services should be human rights?
-Should affordable housing be a human right?
-Should a job be a human right?
-Should cable TV be a human right?
-Should a hybrid car be a human right? (It's green and eco-whatever buzzword you're using now)
-Should paid vacations be a human right?
-Should 25 years of free education be a human right?
Do you think we would have a successful economy if we simply declared all these things "rights"?
Question #18:
I'm only 13 so don't say anything about buying a hybrid car, lol. I just want to help the planet a little bit! (: Thank you.
Question #19:
I am writing a research paper and need more sources on how global warming is being driven by personal intrest of those in positions of power (ex: al gore, politicians, hybrid car makers, power companies and other "green companies")
please only useful answers, i dont care if you think its real or not, im just researching how its being used to market.
Also please link to sources!
Thanks!!
Question #20:
Some "green" approaches really do not save any resources and only feel good. Wind power generation is one great example. They feel good, but produce very little usable power.
Hybrid cars are another good example. No detectable resource savings, but strong in the feel good department.
Turning off your air conditioner. Turning off unused appliances. Taking a bike to the store. These actually save power and resources. Real action takes effort.
This is a green paper, I just need some opposition
