Cars Go Green - hybrid car technology Questions

Cars Go Green - hybrid car technology Questions

Question #1:

Do you agree that our political correct society has thwarted progress?

Obama thinks NASA should be a tool of muslim outreach. NASA hasn't done anything useful in a long time. It's a politically correct , affirmative actions cesspool of liberal hate.

All liberals think that inventing, progressing, and advancing in terms of technology is bad, because it pollutes and is unfair to minorities.

Liberal lawyers have sued so many companies and people, no one wants to risk or invent in America anymore.

If you think i am exaggerating, or full of shyt, look at your appliances in your home. Stove, dishwasher, Car, vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, everything. It has not improved in 30 or 50 years. In 1990, my car got 48 miles per gallon - same as a so-called "hybrid". In 1960, my grandmother's washing machine cleaned better than today's eco-friendly piece of shyt washing machines that use 2 ounces of water and leave your clothes covered with bacteria.
Unbeliveable.
Do you agree or not
yes, we've advanced a lot with computers and video games and Google. But i would remind you that those things do not amount to progress.
They are the media of today.
It should be a small part of progress, but it's 100% of progress. It would be like the 20th century being defined by TV and radio and nothing else. Still riding horses and using stone tools

Question #2:

Need help with a title (read description)?

I want some suggestion, something I can edit to fit the feel of the novel, not the concrete title.

I don't want to give out to much of the novel but: It is in the future, about 80 years, 20 years before the main event humanity was surprised how far technology had got (not lazers and flying cars, think very powerful computers and stuff like that), but the main events get dark, the machines got to strong, and due to some malfunctions (this is not anything like terminator, trust me) they have started making human-machine hybrids (called "abominations", still not terminator, bare with me), these look fairly low tech and disturbing (picture pieces of a human face stitched together yet missing some pieces and pulled over something that looked like a car engine), and now the last remaining humans in this world where oxygen is diminishing are trying to stop the main machine called the "infernal puppet master" (this thing is gonna be ridiculously disturbing and symbolic).

The setting will be a hopeless world where the sun is covered every day, most cities have now devolved into a almost old victorian towns or mutated into odd, almost steampunk worlds.

The weapons used by humans will look old and odd (one I will mention is something that's essentially a small 18th century gatling gun that can be held like a rifle)

and it will use a lot of symbolism involving morality, the debate of religions, and borrow lots from dante's vision of hell from the divine comedy

Question #5:

Conservatives: Why is it considered "conservative" to be against clean energy sources and environment issues?

Shouldn't the "conservative" position be the adult, responsible position on issues? Surely nobody sincerely believes air pollution is a good thing, yet "conservatives" seem to be opposed to solar and wind generators, non-polluting cars that run on electricity or compressed air and hybrid car technology.

I consider myself a conservative, and am sincerely distressed that what passes as "conservativism" on environmental issues is not the responsible position.

Should I cease regarding myself as a conservative? I'm a tea party kind of guy. Should I just disavow the "conservative" nomenclature?
Hey blu . . . I really am a conservative.
I just read through the answers. There's some good thoughts here. Thanks to everyone.
For the record, I don't advocate that the government should spend tax money to fix the environment. Conservatives should simply do the right thing and own solar panels (I do) or a wind generator, drive a hybrid or an electric/compressed air technology car, etc.

Question #6:

What car do you wish someone made? Describe it.?

I wish that Toyota made a Camry Hybrid Wagon. The Prius is too small, and I don't like SUVs, but the Highlander is the only option for a hybrid made in Japan that is bigger than a small car.

What are your car needs, and what would the ideal car to meet those needs look like? Not a fantasy car, but something based on existing technology.

Question #7:

What should I buy for my first car?

I'm going to be 16 soon, and I'm looking for a kind of fun and girly car. I was looking at sports cars, but my parents care too much about safety and my driving speed so now i have to find a family friendly car (which means at least 5 seats) that's still fun for me to drive around.

I'm liking the new toyota prius cuz it's fuel efficient, more spacious than other hybrids, and has cool technology. I also like the ford fiesta for its cool lime green color haha and other features (like the price)....any ideas or suggestions?

btw: price range around 20,000even though the prius is more

Question #8:

When is Chrysler's business and technology defying car going to be released?

Ford reinvented itself after the crisis through it's miraculous Ford Fusion Hybrid, GM is getting ready to release it's much anticipated Chevy Volt. Heck, Nissan is releasing the Leaf and it's not even an American company. What the heck is Chrysler going to do?

Question #9:

Now that Government Motors has introduced the "Volt" will you all be running out to support it?

I have just a couple questions here:
If you have to plug it in and "attach" it to the electric grid, isn't that using "coal-fired" electric plants, which are highly polluting? And didn't Obama pledge to massively increase the cost of coal because it is a "dirty" energy source?

Also, I'm not certain I want to be limited to only 40 miles before a charge is needed, as people aren't going to let you just plug in your car and zap their electric bill, are they?

Don't these take hours to recharge? SO I guess wherever you are going with it, you better be prepared to stay for a while, right?

excerpt...
The long-anticipated Chevrolet Volt, General Motors' electric car, will cost $41,000, the company announced Tuesday, leaving consumers to decide whether its environmental appeal is worth a price far above that of similarly sized conventional autos.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, then-Sen. Barack Obama pledged to put 1 million plug-in vehicles on the road by 2015.

But some analysts said they doubt that electric cars can reach a broad audience in the near term. Hybrid cars took about eight years to reach the million-unit sales mark in the United States, according to Energy Department figures.

"I'm not sure the Volt is going to be a volume vehicle," said George Magliano, director of automotive industry forecasting for North America at IHS Global Insight. "The technology still isn't there to make them cheap. At the end of the day, the consumer pays a hefty premium to make a statement."

Both the Volt and the Leaf will cost considerably more than rival gasoline-powered compact sedans, such as the Honda Civic or the Ford Focus, each of which costs under $20,000.

Price is only one potential barrier to mass adoption, however.

Consumers must also get accustomed to plugging the cars in at home. It takes hours to recharge the vehicles, and in the absence of a network of public recharging stations, drivers that run out of juice may need a tow truck.

Question #10:

Is this the worst time in all of American history to be a young adult?

Back when I was in high school my history teacher told me that learning history is so important because when you learn about the mistakes of former generations you are less likely to repeat them. I truly took that statement to heart. In my days of schooling as a Generation Y we were taught how lucky we are because of all these advances in technology with computers, e-mail, hybrid cars, cell phones, better medical technology, etc. So I basically felt sorry for my parents that they had to grow up in the 70s when things were so "different." I realize civil rights used to be awful. Women were not nearly as empowered as they are now. So I always felt that things used to suck back in the day. I can cite examples of polio outbreaks and other terrible things that were not able to be treated back in the day. So in spite of all the advancements that have been made in America or even the World at large, things basically suck. Women have equal rights. Minorities have equal rights under the law. We have the best medical facilities in the world. Yet life for young adults still sucks. Morals have totally been thrown out the window. Were women really worse off as homemakers than they are now (many of which I just saw at a bar) scantily clad "skanky types" with tattoos, running around having abortions or hooking up guys, or running trains or whatever it is young women demean themselves with these days. College students don't care. The professors just pass kids and it's hard to tell whether a college educated person even knows how to read, given the lack of quality education they have received...most likely because the professors lack an interest in academia just as much as the kids these days. I read about the "ME" generation of the 70s, was it? So are we living in the "ME times 100 times 10, squared" generation? I think, yes. So is the world basically going backwards?

When has it been this bad to be a young adult (high school, getting out of college) in the United States? We felt sorry for our parents because they grew up in such "difficult" times as baby boomers, but they turned out alright didn't they? I'm not sure I will be able to say the same for my generation in 30 years...how about you?

Question #12:

Why do people let this continue?

You have been talking about "going green" for years now, and what has been done?

Well, so far we got a few hybrids out, that STILL run on gas. We have the technology to manipulate molecules and operate systems with just our brains, yet we just can't seem to get off of oil....

I just read an article that said hybrids have "quiet problem". Since they are so quiet they could be dangerous to unsuspecting pedestrians or the blind. Are you kidding me?

We have an oil spill that is devastating the environment and the economy. If I'm not mistaken several people died when the oil spill began, and so far I would bet money that not a single person world-wide has died from a hybrid being too quiet...

Why don't you people ask questions?

Why do you sit back and let your own government bail out massive corporations whose very foundation is OIL!?!

Why don't you make them produce non-petro cars?

Why don't you make them do what you want them to do? You have that right and more importantly, you have that power. You outnumber them tremendously.

I just want to know why. Why everyone has become so detached from the real world, and so amazingly apathetic.

I think I'm becoming misanthropic.
I don't know why I even ask.
I already know the answer.

It's because they have used debt to basically enslave you. And they keep you distracted with stupid garbage, and kept busy with working and trying not to let debt consume you.

All the while not taking the time to realize that money doesn't even serve a purpose to the function of human society. That's the problem.

Get rid of money, and you will see a better time.

Question #13:

What will happen after oil finally finishes?

Hello

I know that many cars and technologies are starting to depending to renewable resources or working more efficiently like Hybrids. My question is , will the whole world be able to survive depending on renewable resources. I think America and Europe, Russia and Japan will, but what of the rest?

So do you think life will be harder then or easier? One thing is for sure, there will be a lot less pollution.

Thanks

Question #14:

Do you think hybrids are a viable alternative?

I wrote a persuasive essay for English a while back and I thought it'd be appropriate to post it somewhere on the Internet, so why not Y!A? :D Anyways, I can't find my 4 or 5 sources anywhere but will edit them in if I find them. Tell me what you guys think...once I get the sources up you can check my internal citations :P
Hybrids Are Bad for the Environment
Hybrids are all the craze nowadays and the car companies are selling them under the impression that they are the ultimate in green car technology. They have an advertised MPG, or miles per gallon, that is much, much higher than gasoline and diesel fueled cars. They emit fewer greenhouse gases while running which contributes to the slowing of global warming, the natural heating of the Earth which can be intensified due to higher than normal amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Finally, they use less gasoline because of the MPG which will save the precious gasoline supplies in the world. But are they really that eco-friendly? Hybrids use Nickel-Cadmium or Lithium-ion batteries, Cadmium and Lithium being extremely rare in large quantities. The processing of the nickel in preparation for battery making releases copious amounts of sulfur dioxide into the air, which causes acid rain, which will destroy the ecosystem for miles around the nickel plants. Hybrids also advertise 19 MPG higher than what the realistic MPGs of hybrids are, and the precious gasoline that hybrids are using less of, will run out about the same time the precious minerals used in the hybrid batteries run out at current rates. There are also hybrids that plug into the wall, and of course that makes the emissions out of the car less, but the emissions from the coal being burned in 70% of the United States is much less clean than the gasoline and diesel fuels. Hybrids should not be developed further, as they are as destructive to the environment as gasoline cars are, as they use precious minerals in their batteries, cause acid rain around the nickel plants, destroying ecosystems, not saving them, and burn coal instead of gasoline for power. The best alternative for the most eco-friendly car is a clean diesel car with the PZEV, or Partial Zero Emission Vehicle, option available at many dealerships.
The batteries used in hybrids destroy ecosystems around the mining and processing plants and the precious minerals used in hybrids will run out at about the same time as gasoline. Will this really solve the problem? The batteries in hybrids, in an example of the Prius batteries, made in Sudbury, Ontario, cause acid rain. According to Impact Lab, “[t]he acid rain around Sudbury was so bad it destroyed all the plants and the soil slid down off the hillside” (Prius), and with more and more companies creating hybrids, more and more battery processing plants will be made, causing more and more acid rain due to the copious amounts of sulfur dioxide emitted during battery processing. Not only do the batteries destroy the ecosystems around the plants, “after maybe 100,000 miles, the battery starts to lose its ability to charge. Tesla Motors performance figures even state that after 50,000 miles, the batteries will only perform at about 70% their optimal, factory level” (Why). What does that mean? That means that after 100,000 miles the battery will have to be replaced, and the used batteries cannot be recycled, and thus just go into landfills. And if you want optimal performance, you’d have to change the battery every 50,000 miles. The average gasoline car can be used until nearly 300,000 miles before ultimate failure with minor repairs, which is 4-7 batteries in a hybrid. And you have to remember that, according to Four-bits.com, “lithium… is pretty rare in large quantities. With projected increases in the use of lithium, the known mines would run out about the same time as oil” (Why). This makes hybrids just another quick fix that won’t fix the problem with the environment long term.
Many hybrids are being converted into plug-in hybrids which plug directly into a household wall socket and charge via the coal-burning power plants that provide electricity to 70% of the United States, and coal emits many more greenhouse gases than gasoline does. This means that “coal-burning plants could be even worse for the environment than gasoline-burning engines…” (Hybrid). And even in the green-powered electricity states, such as California, Jim Motavalli of The Environmental Magazine quoted that the
“ACEEE concluded that a plug-in version of the Toyota Prius could reduce CO2 emissions by a third over a conventional Prius hybrid, but only if its batteries were charged with California electricity — generated mainly from relatively clean sources. In the Midwest, dominated by coal-burning power plants, the report says the plug-in Prius would actually generate one percent more carbon dioxide” (Motavalli).
California being the strictest state in emissions standard, this is a rare case of hybri
Thanks for your rebuttal :D I spent about 5 hours digging through all the pro hybrid stuff to get to this con hybrid stuff... I still dislike hybrids (I'm a fast car guy, not a fuel efficient one) but I was not aware that the sudbury (spelling?) was cleaned up... anyways, thanks for your rebuttal, I convinced my whole english class that hybrids were bad (including my hybrid-driving teacher) so now I have the actual facts. I'd still rather ride a bike to be fuel efficient. :P

Question #15:

does the G W in gw bush stand for?

global warming? he he,
yes i know we need oil but to slow technology to keep the cats fat while mercury is spewed for power plants and cars being less then they can be sound retarded.
we can do better and the only growth and jobs in the auto industry have been from hybrids cause people are sick of the old ways.

look people after, we see glaciers melting at an alarming rate and the biggest un-natural disaster ever in america we need to take our country back from govt.and corporations, banks, those that trade money for money,
in my state they say to not eat the fish you catch, as an avid fisherman this sucks, the only main point that mercury gets into the lakes and rivers is coal burning, i say wind and nuclear power are our options.

Question #16:

How do you feel about all the new technology?

There are more new inventions in the last 10 years......then in the whole history of science !

Smart phones, Hybrid cars, G.P.S, Bar codes, Carbon fiber ...Etc...Etc....
And it's continuing to speed up as we go....make you a little nervous ?...."Welcome To The Future"

Question #17:

Regenerative breaking in hybrid cars?

I think regenerative breaking in hybrid cars captures tiny amount of energy and it's a marketing strategy. Braking occurs in a limited time, technology isn't there to capture energy in a small time unless there is extra capasitors or something like that between regenerative breaking an battery. Am I right? And How regenerative braking works in an engineering point of view?

of new vehicles?

Question #20:

Would you check my writing in English (Hybrid cars)?

I am a student learning English.
I wrote something to brush up on my English skill.
This is not homework. It's just self-studying.
Would you check to see if there are some awkward expressions?
-------
Q: What do you think about hybrid cars?

A: As I know, it has yet to reach commercialization. People say that it is a sort of eco-friendly product, but at times I think it is kind of hypocritical.
The environment would be destroyed while people invented it. I don't know the extent of it exactly, but I am worried that it might lead to another environmental problem.
In addition, the world powers take advantage of environmental problems to get more profits. They monopolize the technology and information. Actually, they have done a lot of harmful things to the nature, but now they are saying that this is all our problem, demanding small nations to follow their order under a guise of protecting the nature.
